Why would a prepaid meter need a KCT?
STS prepaid meters use security keys when validating vending tokens. Industry key migrations and meter-specific updates can require the meter key to be changed before newer energy tokens are accepted.
The Nigerian electricity industry carried out an STS key-revision migration, and some customers may still encounter meters that need the appropriate key-change process before a purchased energy token can be loaded.
How KCTs are normally used
- 1
Confirm through your DISCO or the meter response that a key change is actually required.
- 2
Obtain the KCTs from the official DISCO process for the affected meter.
- 3
Enter the key-change tokens in the exact sequence provided by the DISCO.
- 4
Wait for the meter to accept the key update before entering the purchased energy token.
- 5
Then enter the electricity credit token issued for the meter.
Do not guess KCT values or use key-change tokens issued for another meter. Follow the sequence supplied for your specific meter.
Is a KCT the same as an electricity token?
No. A KCT updates the meter key; the electricity credit token carries the purchased energy value. When a key change is required, both may be involved in restoring normal token loading.
What if the meter still rejects the token after the key update?
Confirm that the KCT sequence was accepted and that the energy token belongs to the same meter. Keep the meter number and successful purchase reference available and contact the relevant DISCO if the meter continues to reject the token.
