Prepaid Meter Token Rejected: Causes and What to Do

A prepaid meter can reject a token for several reasons. The safest response is to confirm that the purchase actually succeeded, verify that the token belongs to the intended meter, and avoid buying another token until you understand why the first one was rejected.

First confirm that the electricity vend succeeded

Check the RavaPay transaction result before troubleshooting the meter. If the transaction is still pending, wait for a final status. If it failed, do not treat a payment confirmation as a valid electricity token.

For a successful prepaid vend, RavaPay displays the token and sends it by SMS and email. Use the token attached to that successful transaction.

Common reasons a prepaid meter may reject a token

  • The token was entered incorrectly. Re-enter it carefully exactly as issued.

  • The token belongs to a different meter. Electricity tokens are generated for a specific meter, so confirm the meter number used for the purchase.

  • The token has already been used. A previously accepted token cannot normally be loaded again as a new recharge.

  • The meter requires an update or Key Change Token (KCT) before it can accept newer vending tokens.

  • The meter or DISCO has returned an account-specific condition that needs to be resolved before the token can be accepted.

What to do before buying another token

  1. 1

Confirm that the RavaPay transaction status is successful.

  2. 2

Compare the meter number used for the transaction with the physical meter you are trying to recharge.

  3. 3

Enter the token again carefully and in the correct sequence shown by your meter.

  4. 4

If your meter indicates that a key update is required, contact the relevant DISCO for the appropriate KCT or meter-update procedure.

  5. 5

If the token is still rejected, keep the transaction reference and contact the relevant support channel before purchasing again.

Do not keep purchasing new tokens to test a meter that is rejecting a valid token. Resolve the meter or account issue first.

Does a rejected token mean the online payment failed?

Not necessarily. A successful vend means a token was generated for the verified meter. The meter can still reject that token because of a meter-specific or account-specific condition.

That is why the transaction result, meter number and any message displayed by the meter should be checked separately.
